In sunlit waters, significant predation is performed by unicellular, phagotrophic mixotrophs, that is, predators also possess plastids. The success of a mixotrophic lifestyle will depend in part on how well mixotrophs acquire prey relative to specialized heterotrophs. To determine whether similar constraints apply phagotrophs across this broad range we compiled 83 measurements flagellate functional responses compared maximum clearance rates (Cmax) ingestion (Imax) trophic modes. We found average mixotroph has 3.7-fold lower Cmax 7.8-fold Imax than heterotroph, after controlling size. smaller penalty suggests fitness be enhanced under dilute concentrations common pelagic ecosystems. find growth greater with Cmax, indicating spectrum strategies may driven phototrophy vs. phagotrophy allocation as fast slow metabolic variation. Allometric scaling shows constrained relationship among dinoflagellates other but achieve volume-specific Cmax. These results should aid interpreting protistan communities modeling mixotrophy.
