Ingestion kinetics of mixotrophic and heterotrophic flagellates

چکیده
In sunlit waters, significant predation is performed by unicellular, phagotrophic mixotrophs, that is, predators also possess plastids. The success of a mixotrophic lifestyle will depend in part on how well mixotrophs acquire prey relative to specialized heterotrophs. Likewise, consequences mixotrophy for productivity and element cycling the rate efficiency at which consume biomass However, trait differences between heterotrophs are not characterized. addition, cell size varies widely, constitutive include small flagellates deriving from diverse taxa, while larger species primarily dinoflagellates. To determine whether similar constraints apply phagotrophs across this broad range we compiled 83 measurements flagellate functional responses compared maximum clearance rates (Cmax) ingestion (Imax) trophic modes. We found average mixotroph has 3.7-fold lower Cmax 7.8-fold Imax than heterotroph, after controlling size. smaller penalty suggests fitness be enhanced under dilute concentrations common pelagic ecosystems. find growth greater with Cmax, indicating spectrum strategies may driven phototrophy vs. phagotrophy allocation as fast slow metabolic variation. Allometric scaling shows constrained relationship among dinoflagellates other but achieve volume-specific Cmax. These results should aid interpreting protistan communities modeling mixotrophy.

Cultivation of Isochrysis galbana in Phototrophic, Heterotrophic, and Mixotrophic Conditions
This study compared the growth and biomass production of Isochrysis galbana under hetero-, mixo-, and phototrophic conditions using different organic carbon sources. The growth of I. galbana was inhibited in heterotrophy but was enhanced in mixotrophy compared to that in phototrophy. Subsequently, the influences of organic carbon and environmental factors (light and salinity) on the growth of I...
متن کاملFatty acid composition of freshwater heterotrophic flagellates: an experimental study
The fatty acid compositions of 5 freshwater heterotrophic flagellates were studied using laboratory cultures. The flagellates Bodo saltans, Paraphysomonas vestita, Spumella pudica, Polytoma uvella and Chilomonas paramecium were cultured on Synura medium enriched either with Régilait milk powder (MP medium; Régilait, St Martin Roche, France) or with Tabimin dry fish food (DFF medium; Tetra, Mell...
متن کاملMolecular comparisons of freshwater and marine isolates of the same morphospecies of heterotrophic flagellates.
Heterotrophic flagellates are key components of all ecosystems. Understanding the patterns of biodiversity of these organisms is thus particularly important. Here we analyzed the intraspecific diversity of 10 morphospecies of heterotrophic flagellates comprising representatives of the Apusozoa (2 morphospecies) and Kinetoplastea (8 morphospecies), all belonging to the most common flagellates wi...
متن کاملHydrogenase and ribulose diphosphate carboxylase during autotrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic growth of scotochromogenic mycobacteria.
Two key autotrophic enzyme systems, hydrogenase and ribulose diphosphate carboxylase, were examined in Mycobacterium gordonae and two other chemolithotrophic, scotochromogenic mycobacteria under different cultural conditions. In all three organisms both enzymes were inducible and were produced in significant levels only in the presence of the specific substrate, hydrogen or carbon dioxide. M. g...
